Women Advance to Bronze Medal Game
Day 3 Recap:
NANAIMO, BC. – The Holland Hurricanes will challenge for the Bronze Medal following a wild 4-3 win over the NAIT Ooks.
Just two minutes into the match, Ibra Sanoh drove home a brilliant free-kick as he curled the ball off the outside of his foot and past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later NAIT tied things up when Ali Musse set up Taylor Bussiere for the score.
The Hurricanes would retake the lead as the rebound from a Sanoh shot went right to Andrew Henry, who buried the chance to make it 2-1. Holland then went up 3-1 when Alexandros Iatrou unleashed a monstrous 70-yard shot that bounced once in the box and over the head of the NAIT keeper.
Matthew McLean closed out the half by heading into a corner kick to get his Ooks within one just before the half-time whistle sounding.
The goal scoring slowed a bit in the second until Sanoh put in his second goal of the game on a great strike from the top of the box.
Just like the previous Bronze Medal semi-final, a crazy finish to the game was in order, as Musse scored in the 87thminute to bring the Ooks within one. A penalty was then awarded to the Hurricanes in the 89th minute, but Justin Marler robbed Sanoh of the hat-trick. The Ooks could not find an equalizer though, and the game finished 4-3.
The Ooks will now re-match with the Durham Lords for 5th place on Saturday, while the Hurricanes will play the Keyano Huskies for Bronze in a rematch of Wednesday's opening action.
The Indiens d'Ahuntsic take on the Algonquin Thunder for 7th and the Gold Medal Match will be between the host VIU Mariners and the PacWest Champion Douglas Royals.

HALIFAX, NS. - The game started with NAIT's dominance of the field. There were three back to back shots by Alana Mawhinney. However, the teamwork between Michelle Brodeur and Bailey Zahorodniuk kept GPRC safe during the majority of the first half. The tables turned ten minutes to half-time as Kassy Jajczay slid past the defense and scored the first goal of the game for NAIT. Five minutes later, the partnership of Marissa Webb and Kaily Mohn allowed the Ooks to rise with a 2-0 advantage.
GPRC's energy improved in the second half, and NAIT's defense became much tighter. The game stalled with multiple throw-ins from both teams. It continued with a back and forth exchange of headers and kicks between teams. Mohn was able to get past GPRC's Ashtyn Haycock. However, Brodeur once again stopped a goal from getting past her. NAIT kept the ball on the GPRC side of the field to keep them from scoring. The final score was 2-0.
Players of the game were Jessica Winterford from GPRC and Kayleigh Pepper from NAIT.
The NAIT Ooks will advance to the bronze medal game tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
