HALIFAX, NS. - The minute the whistle was blown, the game started off intense, speedy and high tempo. The first scoring chance went past Algonquin by NAIT. Algonquin and NAIT's teams focused on their offense, and both teams had strong possession of the ball. All of a sudden, the field was up on its feet cheering. Algonquin's Melissa Gilligan gathered speed, shot past, took on each defender and scored the first goal of the game. NAIT was not fazed; their bounce back was quick as Kaily Mohn performed a strong, attempted shot. One minute of play was added before half-time due to injury. The score at half-time was 1-0.
The second half started with much of the first half's energy. NAIT's Mohn was able to go head to head with Algonquin's keeper, Jenna King. King got out of position in the goal allowing Mohn to score in the back corner of the net. Only moments later, Algonquin prevailed with a quick strike from Darby Perry for a 2-1 advantage. NAIT did well to keep their offense strong and kept pushing to settle the score. A penalty kick was given to Algonquin by Maddie Kelly resulted in a 3-1 score. Three minutes were added before regulation. No new goals were made. The final score was 3-1.
Players of the Game were Darby Perry of the Algonquin Thunder and Kailey Mohn of the NAIT Ooks.
The Algonquin Thunder will receive the bronze medal in the CCAA women's national championship.
