DAY 3 RECAP:
The 2022 CCAA Badminton National Championships concluded on Saturday, March 19, with five championship matches that all went the full distance. The medal rounds capped an exciting tournament at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alberta.
Mixed Doubles
In the first gold medal game of the day, Airi Moromisato and Sirapob Kongubon (Humber College, OCAA) looked to extend their perfect record and claim the championship title. Jack Ronahan and Anna Gillies (UKC, ACAA) weren't going down easily, pushing the match to three games. In the end, Moromisato and Kongubon prevailed to become mixed doubles champions.
Team OCAA's Frederic Houle and Michelle Kozlowskyj (Collège Boréal) were able to claim bronze over team ACAC's Davis Wong and Ivy Ung (NAIT) in a close three-game match (17-21, 21-15, 21-11). Josef Gonzalez and Mintra Taylor (Mount Allison University, ACAA) won the 5/6 match over Shivansh Shivansh and Moominah Ali (NAIT, ACAC).
Women's Doubles
Team OCAA's Victoria Duong and Praanjal Taneja of Humber College battled Team ACAC's Abby Ledda and Cecilia Wolski of The King's University for women's doubles gold. The match went over an hour of playtime between the two teams, resulting in three close games. Duong and Taneja persevered to earn the championship titles (18-21, 21-19, 28-26).
Priyanna Ramdhani and Abbey Taylor of Olds College (ACAC) won the bronze medal game over their competitors Salina He and Katie Liu of Seneca College (OCAA) in a close three-game contest (18-21, 21-16, 21-16). Lindsay Murray and Amber Solomon were able to win fifth place over fellow teammates Taryn Greco and Brianna Warwick, all from Mount Allison University representing the ACAA.
Men's Doubles
The crowd was passionate throughout the men's doubles finals, cheering, chanting, and using various noisemakers to encourage both sides. In another intense three-game match, Akara Chooprawad and Anthony Tso (Seneca College, OCAA) claimed the championship over Bryce Mason and Sam White (UKC, ACAA) (21-19,21-23, 24-22).
San Dang and Arpitraj Sinha of Fanshawe College (OCAA) won the bronze medal match over NAIT's Brandon Gendre and Jay Patel (ACAC). Team ACAC's David Jay and Alex Stewart (The King's University) won the fifth/sixth match over Team ACAA's Kyle Bauld and Adrian Bent (DalAC).
Women's Singles
Team OCAA's I-Ting Liu and Dapasha Prabhjot, both of Seneca College, competed in the gold medal match. It was a close contest between two badminton players that were clearly familiar with each other's game. The match went a full three games with Liu ultimately claiming the national championship (20-22, 21-12, 21-14).
The bronze medal battle was featured two ladies representing team ACAC from Concordia University, Jasleen Kaur and Johnna Rymes. Rymes emerged victorious over her teammate to claim third place. UKC's Fiona Purdy (ACAA) won fifth place over Whitney Doucet of Université Sainte-Anne (ACAA).
Men's Singles
In the final match of the tournament, NAIT's Smit Patel (ACAC) competed against Kunal Sokar of Seneca College (OCAA). Patel, considered the underdog going into this match with a 3-3 record, battled Sokar intensely. In the end, Patel was victorious in claiming the men's singles national championship.
Team OCAA's Yuge Zeng of George Brown College earned the bronze medal against Team ACAC's Narayan Ramdhani of The King's University. Aidan Badcock-Parks was defeated by teammate Jack Gillies of UKC (ACAA) in the fifth/sixth place game.
DAY 2 RECAP:
Day two of the CCAA Badminton National Championships featured the conclusion of the round-robin games and ended with the semi-finals.
Mixed Doubles
Humber College's Airi Moromisato and Sirapob Kongubon (OCAA) finished with a 5-0 record heading into the semi-finals where they faced NAIT's Davis Wong and Ivy Ung (ACAC). Collège Boréal's Frederic Houle and Michelle Kozlowskyj (OCAA) faced UKC's Jack Ronahan and Anna Gillies (ACAA) in the other semi-final.
Moromisato and Kongubon stayed undefeated, winning 2-0 over Wong and Ung (21-6, 21-14). Ronahan and Gillies also advanced and will face Humber's duo in the gold medal match following their 2-0 win over Houle and Kozlowskyj.
Men's Doubles
Team ACAA's pair Bryce Mason and Sam White (UKC) went into the semi-finals with a 4-1 record where they faced team ACAC's Brandon Gendre and Jay Patel (NAIT). Akara Chooprawad and Anthony Tso of Seneca College (OCAA) competed against San Dang and Arpitraj Sinha of Fanshawe College (OCAA), where both teams had the same record of 4-1.
Mason and White will compete against Chooprawad and Tso for gold after both teams won their semi-final matches 2-0. Gendre and Patel will compete for bronze against Dang and Sinha.
Women's Doubles
Team OCAA's Victoria Duong and Praanjal Taneja of Humber College went into the semi-finals with a perfect 5-0 record, where they competed against team ACAC's Priyanna Ramdhani and Abbey Taylor of Olds College. Abby Ledda and Cecilia Wolski (The King's University, ACAC) faced Salina He and Katie Liu (Seneca College, OCAA) in the other semi-final match-up.
Duong and Taneja remained perfect record and now head into the championship match against Ledda and Wolski. Ramdhani and Taylor will battle against He and Liu for the bronze medal.
Men's Singles
Yuge Zeng of George Brown College (ACAA), as well as Kunal Sokar (Seneca College, OCAA) and Narayan Ramdhani (The King's University), all finished with 4-1 records after the round-robin games were completed. Zeng faced Team ACAC's Smit Patel (NAIT) in the semi-finals. Sokar and Ramdhani competed against one another for a spot in the championship match.
Patel was able to defeat Zeng in a close 2-1 game (23-21, 17-21, 21-19) to claim his spot in the championship game. Sokar and Ramdhani's match was also close, with Sokar prevailing with a 2-1 win (21-14, 16-21, 21-12).
Women's Singles
Seneca College's I-Ting Liu (OCAA) was able to move onto the semi-finals with a perfect record of 5-0 to compete against Concordia University's Jasleen Kaur (ACAC). Johnna Rymes of Concordia University (ACAC) headed into the semi-finals with a 3-2 record and faced Dapasha Prabhjot of Seneca College (OCAA), who held a 4-1 record.
Liu sustained her perfect record with a 2-0 victory over Kaur, claiming a spot in the championship match. After a close match between Rymes and Prabhjot, Prabhjot was able to earn the other spot in the gold medal match with a 2-1 win (18-21, 21-18, 21-10).
DAY 1 RECAP:
The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton, Alberta welcomed student-athletes, coaches, and support staff from across Canada for the first CCAA Badminton Championship in two years. The day began with opening ceremonies and the recognition of the CCAA Badminton All-Canadians, Men's and Women's Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.
Men's Singles
Both Narayan Ramdhani (ACAC, The King's University) and Junal Sokar (OCAA, Seneca College) are undefeated at the end of the first day. Yuge Zeng from George Brown College (OCAA) finished day one with a 2-1 record, and Aidan Badcock-Parks of UKC (ACAA) finished day one with a 1-2 record. Both Smit Patel (ACAC, NAIT) and Jack Gillies (OCAA, UKC) were without a win, but both lost close games against their competitors.
Women's Singles
The end of day one concluded with I-Ting Liu from Seneca College (OCAA) being undefeated. Both Dapasha Prabhjot (OCAA, Seneca College) and Jasleen Kaur (ACAC, Concordia University) finished the first day with a 2-1 record. Fiona Purdy of UKC (ACAA) and Johnna Rymes of Concordia University (ACAA) concluded day one with a 1-2 record. Whitney Doucet of Université Sainte-Anne (ACAA) finished the day still seeking her first win.
Men's Doubles

However, both teams have played well.

Both Team ACAA Josef Gonzalez and Mintra Taylor (Mount Allison U) and Team ACAC Shivansh Shivansh and Moominah Ali (NAIT) finished the first day without a win. Still, they were able to play competitively against their opponents.
NAIT is hosting the 2021/22 CCAA Badminton Nationals from March 17-19 at the NAIT gymnasium. The CCAA Nationals will feature players from Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA), Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), and Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA).
All the awards that are normally awarded at the banquet will be acknowledged at the opening ceremonies on March 17th.
