The NAIT Ooks women's hockey team fell to the Red Deer Queens in game three of the ACAC finals, presumably ending their season. Game three on Friday night was a drama-filled affair. The Queens opened the scoring late in the first period, but the Ooks answered with one of their own late in the second. Both goaltenders were sensational, making game-saving stops for their clubs down the stretch. The two teams needed extra hockey to determine this one, where Queens leading scorer Avery Lajeunnesse wrapped a loose puck past Havana Batke for the golden goal. The Ooks fans, coaching staff and players were left confused as it seemed like the referee had blown her whistle before the puck crossed the line, but the goal on the ice stood, and the Red Deer Queens were champions. The Ooks captured the silver medal, but it felt bittersweet for the team. After a dominant regular season, the Ooks had aspirations of gold, and although they fell short, it was a very successful season for the women.
The NAIT Ooks men's cinderella run fell short of a championship. They dropped game three on the road to the Red Deer Kings. Thanks to Dylan Stewart, the Ooks got on the board first early in the middle frame. Kings replied with the game-tying marker late in the frame. Red Deer forward Erik Miller scored the eventual game-winning goal early in the third period. The Ooks couldn't find a way to beat Arik Weersink, who was remarkable all series long and was a difference maker. After finishing the regular season as the number five seed, the Ooks came from behind on the road to defeat the Briercrest Clippers. In round two, they faced the Augustana Vikings, who were coming off a bye week, and the Ooks took care of business with ease sweeping them two games to none. The Ooks secured silver and have now medalled in back-to-back seasons.
