The NAIT Women's Volleyball team is gearing up for an exciting 2023-2024 season, determined to build upon the foundation set in the previous year. Despite a challenging record of 4-22 in the 2022-2023 season, the Ooks demonstrated their resilience by pushing some of ACAC's top teams to their limits. The team's grit and determination have not gone unnoticed, setting the stage for a promising year ahead.
Heading into the new season, the Ooks find themselves without key players from the previous roster, including the experienced setter Kate Krogen, dynamic middle blocker Karly Burkinshaw, and versatile right-side player Kayla Zazula. This transitional phase has given the team a fresh opportunity as they embrace a formidable recruiting class composed of talented athletes eager to don the iconic NAIT jersey.
"This season, I have brought in 9 new recruits. I am very excited to add these student-athletes to the roster. I spent the off-season doing a lot of recruiting and getting to know them. I like what each of them brings to the team," said Head Coach Erminia Russo Thorpe.
Let's take a closer look at the standout recruits who will be donning the NAIT jersey this season:
Tanisha McQueen- Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta
McQueen comes to NAIT after playing two seasons at Keyano College. During her time with the Huskies, the 5'11 Middle Blocker played in 11 matches amassing 14 kills and eight blocks. The Business Administration student will help bring more size and power to the Ooks front court.
Makenna Doyle- Vernon, British Columbia
Doyle, the high-flying Outside Hitter, is the first ACAC newcomer. The 5'10 Attacker played on team BC and was the captain of the Sky Volleyball U18 team that made it to the quarterfinals of Division Two Nationals. Doyle's high-speed swing will help provide crucial scoring for the NAIT offence.
Hannah McLaughlin- Prince George, British Columbia
McLaughlin is the second recruit to come from our neighbouring province. The 5'9 Outside Hitter played for the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club on their 18U Girls Kodiaks Red Squad. The Business Administration student has all the skills needed to be a great six-rotation player.
Egypt Trydal- Grand Prairie, Alberta
The Ooks add fresh blood at the setting position with 5'8 Egypt Trydal. She was the captain of the South Peace Volleyball Club (SPVC) U18 Green team, which won bronze at Division Two Provincials. The Open Studies student brings valuable setting experience to the team and will make an impact in her first year with the ACAC.
Angelina Silva- Grand Prairie, Alberta
The second SPVC member coming to the team is Libero Angelina Silva. The 5'8 Defensive Specialist played alongside Egypt Trydal on the 18U Green team. She is enrolled in the Open Studies program and her dedication to joining the program stems from her interactions with Coach Erminia and existing team members.
Ashley Wiesener- Leduc, Alberta
Joining the robust Middle Blocker group is 5'10 Ashley Wiesener. Wiesener played for the Nooks Volleyball Club and impressed coaches at the ID camp. She brings a fast arm swing and impressive blocking abilities to the frontcourt and will be a great addition to the team.
Lexi Gedny- Taber, Alberta
Coming to the team is Setter Lexi Gedny. The 5'8 first year played for the Panthers 18U team and is enrolled in the Personal Fitness Training Program. Gedny emerges as a first-year player with the potential to fill the shoes of departing setter Kate Krogen.
Aysha Savoury- Edmonton, Alberta
Aysha Savoury is the second Libero coming to NAIT. The 5'3 back row specialist played for the St.Albert Sturgeon Volleyball Club on their 18U Green team. The Radio and Television student says her decision to join the program was influenced by her club assistant coaches, Emma and Julia, who highlighted the sense of community and growth within the NAIT team. Her defensive abilities will benefit the team's backcourt play.
After taking the 2022/23 season off, another great addition to the team is returning player Anna Atcheynum. Hailing from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, the 5'11" Outside Hitter returns to the NAIT gymnasium as a 4th-year player. With three previous seasons under her belt (2018-2022), Atcheynum's experience shines through. Her impressive 2021/22 season showcased 136 kills, 105 digs, and a .297 hitting percentage, signaling her intent to contribute significantly on both the offensive and defensive fronts.
The Ooks kick off their regular season campaign at home against the Concordia Thunder on Friday, October 20th, at 6:00 PM, with preseason matches commencing in the coming weeks.
