The NAIT Ooks women's basketball team is on the brink of an exhilarating 2023/24 season, brimming with nervous excitement. Under the guidance of Head Coach Kiera Lyons, the team is prepared to make waves in the ACAC and beyond.
Their journey begins on the road as they face the Concordia Thunder on Friday, October 20th. The home opener, set for Saturday, October 21st at 6 PM, is eagerly anticipated, promising a showcase of their hard work and determination.
With a challenging 20-game season ahead, the team's aspirations are set high, with Coach Lyons stating, "We want to compete for a spot at Nationals. Our first aspiration is to make it to the ACAC Championship; if we do that, anything can happen."
Coach Lyons candidly shared her feelings heading into the season, "I'm nervous but excited for what we are building." The team dynamic is marked by youth and hunger. With a young roster, the players are eager to learn, compete, and bond. Coach Lyons highlighted the excitement and willingness to learn and grow within the team.
One of the significant highlights of the season is the prospect of playing in the CCAA Nationals, hosted in Lloydminster, Alberta from March 13-16, 2024. The opportunity to showcase their talent on such a considerable platform, in front of a hometown crowd, would be a dream come true for the team.
The preseason has been an essential part of their preparation, especially given that a majority of the team is experiencing their first post-secondary season. It's been a period of laying the groundwork for the regular season. The exhaustion and challenges faced in September have only amplified the excitement for the regular season ahead.
