The NAIT Ooks men's and mixed curling teams are set to make their mark at the upcoming ACAC Curling Championship in Airdrie, Alberta, hosted by SAIT, from February 23-25.
The men's team boasts an impressive record of 9-1, while the mixed team is positioned in the middle of the pack. Head Coach Karynn Flory-Simmons is optimistic about the challenges that lie ahead.
Reflecting on her teams' readiness, Coach Flory-Simmons says, "We feel very confident going into championship weekend. They are ready to take on the weekend." The extended period without competition has been utilized wisely, with extra practice time serving as an opportunity for refinement and improvement.
"These last few practices have really been about fine-tuning our communication and shot-making. We know that we are not going to make 100 percent of our shots; however, we also know that we want to get the most out of every shot," explains Coach Flory-Simmons. The focus has been on strategic aspects of the game, emphasizing shot tolerance, effective communication, and game-based decision-making.
With a remarkable season behind them, the men's team has a chance to secure a spot at the CCAA Curling Nationals in Fredericton, New Brunswick, from March 12-16. Coach Flory-Simmons emphasizes the team's approach to the championship: "Our men's team has had a great season so far, and we want nothing more than to finish it off with an ACAC Championship. However, we want to think about the here and now, not the end goal - game by game, shot by shot. The boys have all bought in, and we truly feel the excitement going into the weekend."
The positive energy and commitment from both the men's and mixed teams are palpable, creating a sense of anticipation as they head into the championship weekend in Airdrie. Coach Flory-Simmons enthusiastically concludes: "The vibrations from both the men's and mixed teams are so wonderful to feel as we head into this championship weekend in Airdrie." With confidence, preparation, and a shared sense of excitement, the NAIT Ooks curling teams are ready to face the challenges and strive for success at the ACAC Curling Championship.
