EDMONTON, ALTA. - Graeme Craig's overtime power play goal handed the University of Alberta Golden Bears the victory over the NAIT Ooks in Face-Off 2018, which took place in the NAIT Arena on Friday night.
It was the NAIT Ooks who opened the scoring in the Friday night thriller, when Jesse Roach scored 3:06 into the first period. Tyler Soy responded for the Golden Bears 57 seconds later to tie the game at one. U of A would control the play for the remainder of the opening frame but were unable to solve Brendan Jensen.
Jayden Hart gave the Bears a 2-1 lead 3:59 into the second period, but Brandon Ralph responded a minute later for the Ooks to once again tie the game. The second period was much more evenly matched than the first.
The Ooks would find themselves defending for the majority of the third as they fell into penalty trouble early in period killing off three penalties in the first ten minutes. NAIT would push back in the final half of the frame exchanging scoring chances which were unsuccessful forcing overtime.
The Golden Bears began overtime on the power play, which would be where the game would end as Graeme Craig beat Patrick Gora to seal the victory a minute into extra time.
Ooks head coach, Tim Fragle was asked about his team's performance following the game: "We played much better today than we did when we played them in September, which is a good sign that we are growing into a better team."
Face-Off 2019 will be hosted by U of A next December, where the two teams will look to continue their cross-town rivalry.
