Saturday afternoon, the NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) Ooks women's basketball team faced the visiting Keyano Huskies for the second time this weekend. The Ooks split the weekend, winning the second game 74-70.
The first quarter was a close one between the Ooks and the Huskies. The Huskies got the lead first after number seven Kayla Lutterodt made the first shot of the game; however, the Ooks did not let that last long. The Ooks got a couple of basket lead over the Huskies with three-pointers made by number ten, Elizabeth Salcedo.
After the first quarter, the Ooks lead 14-11.
In the second quarter, the Huskies tied the score 22-22 four minutes into the quarter. Both teams play killer offence and defence, going back and forth with ball possession. The Huskies took a slight lead over the Ooks; however, this lead did not last long.
After a close first half, the Ooks lead 37-36 at halftime.
After the halftime break, the Ooks extended their lead over the Huskies from one point to eight. The Huskies worked hard to stop the Ooks' offence and start something of their own. The Ooks' defence did not let up and continued to control the Huskies' offence. Ooks' number six, Payton Neilson, stepped around the Huskies' defence to make a lay-up after bringing the ball up the court.
At the end of the third quarter, the Ooks lead 56-42.
In the fourth quarter, the Ooks extended their lead over the Huskies. After some excellent ball movement on the outside, Huskies number three, Zera Lynn Panesea, makes a three-pointer. The Huskies slowly chip away at the Ooks' lead to five. With a minute left in the game, the Ooks have a four-point lead over the Huskies, 71-67. The Huskies' number twenty-two, Kaylyn Tucker, made a three-point shot making it a one-point game. The Ooks' number nine, Abi Payne, is then sent to the free-throw line twice, giving her team more of a lead.
Ooks beat the Huskies 74-70.
The players of the game were number fifteen, Kaytlyn Poberznick, from the Ooks, and number twenty-two, Kaylynn Tucker, from the Huskies.
