The NAIT Ooks hosted the Olds Broncos in game one of the ACAC semi-finals.
n the opening minutes of the first, the Ooks were the superior team. They outworked the Broncos in all three zones, winning races and battles to the puck. Ooks were having success transitioning through the neutral zone, which led to a few quality chances. Broncos netminder Lacey Friesen was forced to make some challenging saves. The Broncos were finally able to generate their first shots on goal, but Ooks goaltender Kaitlyn Slator stood tall. It was the Ooks who opened the scoring off the stick of Cassidy Shandro. The Ooks were awarded the game's first powerplay and came inches away from doubling their lead. Darby Robertson beat Friesen but couldn't beat the crossbar, and the game remained 1-0 after one. The Ooks outshot the Broncos 8-3.
The second period started as a back-and-forth affair, as neither team could sustain much zone time. The physicality began to ramp up, and the playoff intensity was in full effect as the period rolled along. The Ooks started to settle into their own, creating opportunities for themselves, using their speed and relentless forecheck. Broncos swung the momentum in their favour, but the Ooks were doing a great job getting in the shooting lanes. Olds had a powerplay late in the middle frame but couldn't muster anything, and the Ooks took their one-goal lead to the break.
It was all Ooks early, as they opened the final frame getting pucks and bodies to the net. Ooks were doing an excellent job causing turnovers using their speed, and Friesen made some difficult saves, holding the Ooks lead to one. The Ooks continued to press off the rush and created second-chance opportunities off the cycle. At the midway point, the Broncos started to show some desperation, but it was short-lived as the Ooks swung the momentum in their favour. The Ooks were sent to the man advantage late in the third period and capitalized, thanks to Sierra Meroniuk who extended the Ooks lead to 2-0. Slator was tasked with some challenging shot opportunities down the stretch but was remarkable as the Ooks took game one 2-0. The Ooks have a chance to advance to league finals with a win tomorrow night in Olds.
