Kennedy Hennig scored twice to lead the NAIT Ooks women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over the MSVU Mystics in quarter-final action of the 2018 CCAA Women's Soccer National Championship, in Coquitlam, British Columbia.
COQUITLAM, B.C. - The NAIT Ooks women's soccer team defeated the MSVU Mystics 2-0 in quarter-final action of the 2018 CCAA Women's Soccer National Championship in Coquitlam, British Columbia.
The Ooks controlled the play for the majority of the game. The Mystics were able to hold them scoreless until first-year forward Kennedy Hennig found the back of the net in the 37th minute, to give her team a 1-0 lead. Hennig then struck again 5 minutes later, scoring her second of the game, solidifying a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The second half would be a lot of the same tone. However, both teams would remain off the scoresheet handing the Ooks a 2-0 victory and a trip to the semi-finals. Kennedy Hennig's two-goal performance earned her the Player of the Game honours. "For a first-year player to score two goals in a national championship game is huge not only for us but, its a great experience for her. She's been great for us all season," said Ooks head coach Carole Holt.
The Ooks will now face the Champlain Cavaliers who defeated the VIU Mariners 3-1. The Cavaliers enter the tournament as the RSEQ Wildcard after falling in the conference championship game to Garneau. Champlain finished second in the RSEQ standings with a regular season record of 7-2-1.
When asked about the Cavaliers, Holt said: "They have a strong attack, they come at you with pace. We will need to be defensively sound to keep the ball in front of us tomorrow."
Kickoff for NAIT's semi-final match angainst the Cavaliers will be at 3:00 PM PST tomorrow. The winner will head to the CCAA Women's Soccer National Championship final which will take place on Saturday, November 10th.
