SHERWOOD PARK, Alta. - The NAIT Ooks women's soccer team dropped their final regular-season game to the Concordia Thunder 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams came in expecting a battle, and that is what they got in this one. The Thunder's Rebecca Leavell was the lone goal scorer in the first half as she beat Toni Burse in the 31st minute to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead at half time.
In the second half, Vanessa Minckler found the back of the net in the 59th minute to tie the game at one. Elizabeth Crothers responded immediately with a goal of her own in the 62nd minute to put Concordia back up by one. Despite several attempts, NAIT was unable to tie the game up. The Thunder came out with a 2-1 win.
Both teams finish the season 10-1 with NAIT clinching first based on third tiebreaker (regular-season goal differential). The NAIT Ooks will now receive a bye into the semi-final game at the ACAC Women's Soccer Championship, which they are hosting next weekend at Emerald Hills Sports Pavillion in Sherwood Park. The Thunder will face the Olds College Broncos in the quarter-final.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game. Our goal was too finish top of the league and clinch a bye going into Provincials, which we did. I am proud of our team, and now we will reset and get ready for next weekend," said Ooks' head coach Carole Holt.
Players of the game were Toni Burse (NAIT) and Breanna Callandar (CUE).
