EDMONTON, Alta. - Jake Mykitiuk was named Male Athlete of the Year, Marissa Webb earned the honour of Female Athlete of the Year, while Brendan Jensen took home the Director's Award of Excellence, during the NAIT Athletics Awards Presentation on Friday night.
Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the presentation was forced to be altered from the typical formal show to a video that was made live on Friday night on ACACTV.
During the video three team awards were given out to a student-athlete of each team:
Rookie of the Year Award - This award is presented to a first-year student-athlete who exhibits the following qualities: unselfish play, strong leadership skills, intensity, and a great attitude.
Ook Leadership Award - Winners of this award all have something in common; commitment, dedication, strong leadership and a work ethic that served as motivation for their teammates.
Silver Torch (MVP) Award - This award is the most prestigious individual athletic team award presented by NAIT Athletics. This award is presented to the student-athlete deemed to have contributed the most to the overall success of their team; the team's Most Valuable Player.
Following all of the team award winners being revealed, the three annual major awards were unveiled.
First, the Director's Award of Excellence, followed by the two President's Awards - Male and Female Athlete of the Year.
A fifth-year student-athlete from the men's hockey team, Brendan gained a lot of positive attention this season as he started "Jenner's Saves," an initiative to raise money and awareness for the Brain Trauma Foundation. During his time at NAIT, Jensen has been an active member of the student-athlete council and an honour roll student, all while achieving several significant athletic accomplishments, including an ACAC Player of the Year award. | |
A fourth-year student-athlete from the men's hockey team, Jake was named ACAC Top Scorer, First Team All-Conference and Player of the Year after leading the ACAC in scoring by sixteen points, tallying 17 goals and adding 37 assists (54 points) in 28 games. His performance helped his team finish atop the ACAC for the eighth straight season with a 24-4 record. Mykitiuk is also the all-time leading scorer in NAIT Ooks men's hockey history. |

A fifth-year student-athlete from the women's soccer team, Marissa was named ACAC Player of the Year, First-Team All-Conference, and CCAA All-Canadian after leading the ACAC with 19 goals and five assists in 12 games. She captained the NAIT Ooks to a first-place finish in the regular season with an 11-1 record, leading to a gold medal at the ACAC Championship and a tenth consecutive CCAA National Championship berth. |
