The NAIT Ooks basketball teams take the court this weekend in the first round of playoffs. This season, the top six teams in each division are awarded a playoff position. The first two seeds receive a first-round bye leaving the 3rd place to take on the 6th place and 4th place to take on 5th place in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals will take place on Friday, March 4th, with the winning teams moving onto the semi-finals on Sunday. On Sunday, the two teams who come out victorious will take their place in the ACAC Final Four Championship on March 11th and 12th. The top-seeded south school will host the men's championship, with the women's championship being hosted by the top-seeded team in the north.
The NAIT Ooks women's basketball team finished third overall this season, giving them the home-court advantage going into the quarterfinals. They will take on the sixth place Concordia Thunder. NAIT hasn't played the Thunder since November, but they won their only regular-season match-up this year.
Head Coach Todd Warnick says, "it is a great privilege to host a playoff game, which we have not done for a number of years. Both teams will be well prepared, and I am anticipating a very competitive game." Tip-off for the Ooks is 6:00 PM on Friday, March 4th.
The NAIT Ooks men's basketball team finished the season in fifth place after a nail-biting finish last weekend against the fourth-place GPRC Wolves. The Ooks will travel up to Grande Prairie on Friday in hopes of prolonging the season. It will be a close game as the teams went 1-1 in a two-game Ooks homestand last weekend.
Head Coach Jordan Baker has this to say about the game, "our playoff match-up versus Grande Prairie provides us with an excellent opportunity to show the resilience of our team. After a chaotic February, our student-athletes are excited to rise to the occasion and perform at their best." The quarterfinal game begins at 6:00 PM on Friday, March 4th.
