The NAIT Ooks curling team hits the road this weekend for the ACAC Curling Championships hosted but the University of Augustana Vikings. This season, NAIT has played with three groups, one in each division: men's, women's, and mixed.
The NAIT Ooks men's curling team went 0-2 in the first bonspiel of the season. They came back more robust in the second one going 1-1 on the day. The Ooks are placed fourth out of the five teams in the division, but they have gotten stronger as the season has progressed.
The women's team is at the top of their division after an impressive 2-0 showing at the first bonspiel and a 1-1 finish at the second. Lakeland College and Red Deer Polytechnic are not far behind them, so they are in for a challenging but lucrative battle for the top position at the championship.
The mixed division is the smallest of the three, with only three teams. NAIT came out strong in the first bonspiel, winning 2-0 but fell to the Lakeland Rustlers in the second bonspiel to give them a 1-1 finish. They are still at the top of their division with an impressive 3-1 standing. The Lakeland Rustlers improved from 0-2 in the first tournament to 2-0 in the second, so it will be a fun, but close battle as the two teams go head-to-head for first place.
All teams in each category qualify for the ACAC championship. Unfortunately, this year they have decided not to go ahead with the curling National Championship, so this will be the last bonspiel of the season for the curling teams.
The championships run from 9:30 am - 8:00 pm on Saturday, March 5th, and 8:30 am - 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 6th. Here are the times. Catch the action on acactv.ca or Telus Optik channel 1998.
