Todd Warnick has been an integral part of the NAIT Athletics department for the past 12 years. Warnick recently left the NAIT Ooks following the 2021-22 season to start a new chapter at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops. He has coached through various circumstances and always found a way to push through. NAIT Athletics Manager Jordan Richey said, "Todd instantly provided our women's basketball team credibility and turned the team into a playoff contender every season. He changed the culture of the program and now owns every head coaching milestone at NAIT."
In his time at NAIT, Warnick managed to win back-to-back ACAC Bronze medals in 2012-13 and 2013-14 before guiding the Ooks to their first-ever ACAC Championship in NAIT history in 2015-16 and the first appearance at the CCAA Nationals, bringing home a CCAA Bronze in 2015-16.
Warnick stepped up to the plate one last time this season. He guided the NAIT Ooks women's basketball team to a CCAA gold medal finish against Victoria Island University (VIU) at VIU. This is the first time the team has brought home the title in program history. It was a full-circle moment for Warnick as his coaching career started at VIU, which means Warnick coached his first and last CCAA games on the same court.
Losing a coach like Warnick is never easy, says Richey, "while it is difficult to see Todd move on from our women's basketball team after witnessing the team capture the national championship, I couldn't dream of a better scenario for Todd and his family to go out on top. He deserves all the success he has had recently, and the department wishes him and his family nothing but the best as they move to Kamloops and TRU."
Warnick brought more to the program than just wins. Richey says, "Todd has changed the culture for the program. Not only was the team national champs this season, but they were NAIT Athletics' top scholastic team this past fall with a team GPA of 3.37. He recruited young women who wanted to succeed both on the court and in the classroom, which is a feature we want our new coach to continue."
Once an Ook, always an Ook. Good luck, Todd!
