The NAIT Ooks men's basketball team is coming into the 2022-23 season with a new fire. The team finished the 2021/22 season in fifth place after losing a heartbreaking quarterfinal match 71-63 against the Wolves. Second-year Head Coach Jordan Baker is back leading the charge ahead of the new season.
The NAIT Ooks have added ten new players to the roster this season.
"Our recruits provide us with improved depth at a number of positions. We have brought in a nice mix of rookies and transfers to help us be successful in both the short and long term. We pride ourselves on playing unselfish basketball, and I think the new players will only elevate our quality of play as the season progresses," said Baker.
Last season was impacted by the pandemic, which decreased the number of games in the regular season; it also influenced the amount of travel for teams. This year is back to normal, and all of the student-athletes will have to get into a new rhythm this season.
"This year's ACAC schedule is much different than what we experienced last year. More games, more opponents, and more travel. We will certainly need to be disciplined when it comes to our preparation for so many different opponents.," said Baker.
The new NAIT Ooks team is ready for any challenge they are presented with this season.
"I think the reason our team could be dangerous this year is our depth. We have multiple players who can score 20+ on any given night, and we have an unselfish group of players who take pride in seeing their teammates succeed," said Baker.
The NAIT Ooks men's basketball season goes from October 21st to February 18th. The ACAC Championship will be held in Calgary at Ambrose University from March 2-4. The season will come to a close at SAIT in Calgary, AB, on March 16-19, 2023, for the CCAA National Championship.
The NAIT Ooks home-opener is on Friday, October 21st, at 8:00 PM in the NAIT gym. Catch the action in person, on ACACTV or Telus Optik channel 1998.
