The NAIT Ooks women's soccer team is gearing up for the 2023/24 season, and there's a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation in the air. With last season's fourth-place finish in the ACAC, the team, under the guidance of Coach Dhee Govender, is determined to make a triumphant return to championship contention.
Coach Dhee Govender, known for his passion and dedication to the game, shared his thoughts on the upcoming season. "As a coach heading into the 2023/24 women's college soccer season, I'm filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. It's a fresh start, a new chapter, and an opportunity to guide a group of talented athletes striving to return to a championship-caliber program."
The aspirations for the season are crystal clear. "We aim to be competitive, play attractive soccer, and strive for excellence," says Coach Govender. "We want our players to grow not only as athletes but also as individuals. We emphasize teamwork, discipline, and a strong work ethic as essential values for success."
With a glance at the roster, it's evident that this season brings a new dynamic. "This season, we've welcomed a number of new players to our program," Coach Govender reveals. "They bring unique skills and perspectives, and it's been exciting to see them integrate into the squad. While it's still early, there are a few standout newcomers who have already demonstrated their potential. Their talent and dedication have been impressive, and they add dynamic skill sets to our squad."
However, the heart of the team lies in its returning players, who embody the spirit of the Ooks. "Our returning players are the core of our team," Coach Govender emphasizes. "They bring experience, leadership, and are growing with the group as we all find a deep understanding of our playing style and philosophy. They've been setting an example for the newcomers, and I have no doubt that they will continue to be the driving force behind our team's success."
As the season unfolds, Coach Govender's role is clear. "My role is to guide, motivate, and develop these young athletes," he says with determination. "I want to help them reach their full potential, both on and off the field. We know that success in college soccer isn't guaranteed, and it often requires overcoming challenges and setbacks. But with a group of dedicated players, a strong coaching staff, and a shared commitment to our goals, we're excited to face the season with humility, determination, and the belief that we can achieve great things together."
The team hits the field for their home opener on Saturday, September 9th, at 12:00 PM at the St. Albert Soccer Association.
Provincials for the 2023 season will be co-hosted by King's University, Concordia University, and NAIT, taking place in Edmonton from October 26th to 28th. The CCAA Nationals will be held at Holland College in PEI from November 8th to 11th.
The journey begins, and the NAIT Ooks are ready to write a new chapter in their soccer history.
