As the NAIT Ooks badminton team gears up for the upcoming season, Head Coach Alan Chow expresses optimism about the team's prospects. Despite not having the entire roster in the first semester, Chow highlights the team's depth as a strong point, instilling confidence in their ability to perform well throughout the season.
The badminton season is notably short, prompting strategic planning to ensure preparation. Chow emphasizes, "Understanding the short season, we planned out our schedule, encompassing practices, and tournaments, to ensure optimal preparation. This strategic approach means that from the very first tournament, each athlete will be fully prepared and ready to compete at their best."
With high aspirations for the season, the team aims for a strong performance in all badminton events, including singles, doubles, and mixed. Currently, the team comprises four female and five male athletes, with plans to expand to full strength with five female and five male athletes in the next semester, enhancing their competitive edge.
Several standout players are set to lead the team. Davis Wong, a proven champion with back-to-back provincial mixed titles and a fourth-place finish at the nationals, aims to continue his success and potentially secure a national medal. Additionally, Noel Do and Sylvie Bibeau, returning with an impressive track record of finishing second in provincials and third in nationals last year, add strength to the lineup.
The Ooks are gearing up for a competitive schedule, including tournaments hosted by the Concordia Thunder on November 19th, the SAIT Trojans on January 21st, and The King's University Eagles on February 4th. The pinnacle of the ACAC season will be the Championships hosted by NAIT on February 17th and 18th, a key opportunity to showcase their skills on home turf. Beyond the ACAC, the team eagerly anticipates the CCAA Nationals, hosted by Seneca Polytechnic in Ontario, from February 28th to March 2nd, with hopes of making a significant mark on the national stage.
