As the NAIT Ooks women's futsal team gears up for the 2024 season, Head Coach Dhee Govender shares insights into their preparations, aspirations, and the challenges that come with the unique dynamics of futsal.
Heading into the 2024 futsal season, Coach Govender expresses a mix of nerves and excitement. "It's a privilege to guide this talented group, especially considering that they don't primarily play futsal. We're taking a pragmatic approach, recognizing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead," he states. The team's versatility, transitioning from other disciplines to futsal, adds an element of adaptability to their game.
Coach Govender's aspirations for the season revolve around clarity and continuous learning. "We aim to be crystal clear about our journey, understanding that each match is an opportunity to grow," he emphasizes. The team's focus on development is evident, with a keen awareness of the talent within the league. "The league boasts some incredibly talented programs, and our goal is to keep building a solid foundation for the future," adds Coach Govender. Building on last year's success, where the team earned its first-ever futsal medal, they are eager to elevate their performance.
This season presents a logistical challenge with a significant amount of travel. However, Coach Govender sees it as an opportunity for the players. "The additional weekend of games is great for the players. It's an exciting format that allows each program to adapt and refine their strategies throughout the season," he notes. Rather than being a hindrance, the travel is viewed as a means for the team to bond and refine their game.
Reflecting on the choice of venue for the tournaments, Coach Govender expresses gratitude for the positive experience at Portage last season. "We had a fantastic experience at Portage last season. Jim Knight and his team hosted a highly successful North regionals, and the facility provided a buzzing atmosphere. We are grateful that they have stepped up to host these matches," he acknowledges.
As the NAIT Ooks women's futsal team prepares for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, there's a sense of determination and a commitment to building on past successes. The first tournament kicks off on Friday, January 19th.
