The NAIT Ooks women's soccer team is gearing up for an exciting and competitive 2024/25 season under Head Coach Dhee Govender. With high aspirations and a fresh infusion of talent, the Ooks are ready to take on their opponents in the ACAC, starting with their season opener on Friday, September 6th, at 4 PM against The King's Eagles. Their home opener will be on Saturday, September 14th, at 12 PM, with all home games played at the St. Albert Soccer Association. The team is focused on challenging for a top spot in the North division, with eyes firmly set on the ACAC Championship in Grande Prairie from October 25-27, hosted by the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves. A trip to the CCAA Nationals in Squamish, BC, hosted by Capilano University from November 6-9, is also on the horizon.
Coach Govender's aspirations for the season are clear: "Our main goal is to compete at the highest level and challenge for the top two spots in the North. We're focused on improving our consistency, especially in key matches, and we want to play attractive football. Ultimately, we have championships on our mind and want to establish ourselves as a team that is hard to play against." This ambition is shared throughout the squad, as the Ooks aim to build on past performances and take their game to new heights this season.
The team has seen a major influx of new talent, with 14 new players joining the roster, adding to the squad's depth and versatility. "We've brought in 14 new players this season, each bringing a unique skill set that complements our returning players," Govender said. He noted that several of these new additions have already impressed during pre-season. "Many players have really caught our attention. They've shown exceptional talent and adaptability, and I'm confident they'll play a crucial role in our season."
A key factor in the Ooks' potential success will be the strong team chemistry that has developed during pre-season. "Team chemistry is strong," Govender emphasized. "The players have gelled well, both on and off the field. There's a good mix of experienced leaders and young talent, and the camaraderie is evident in their interactions. Everyone is committed to the same goals, and that unity will be key as we move forward."
However, the road ahead won't be without challenges. Consistency is a major focus for the team as they navigate a highly competitive league. "One of the biggest challenges will be maintaining consistency throughout the season," Govender admitted. "The league is highly competitive, and every team will be pushing hard, so we need to be at our best in every match." Additionally, managing injuries and squad rotation will be crucial as the season progresses. "Injuries and squad rotation will also be factors we'll have to manage carefully to keep our momentum going."
With a strong roster, a cohesive team dynamic, and a clear focus on competing for championships, the NAIT Ooks women's soccer team is prepared to make a serious run for success in 2024/25. As they kick off their season, fans can expect an exciting brand of soccer and a team determined to make its mark in the ACAC and beyond.
