The NAIT women's volleyball team is welcoming five new recruits to its roster for the upcoming season. Head Coach Erminia Russo Thorpe expressed her enthusiasm for the newcomers, who are poised to significantly impact the team's dynamic and performance.
Among the recruits is Courtney Webber, a libero with a unique background. In her mid-20s and already holding a degree, Webber brings valuable maturity and a diverse skill set from her experience in beach volleyball and Indigenous games. "Her experience is really nice to have," said Russo Thorpe, emphasizing the stability she adds to the roster.
Other notable recruits include Rachel Mallett, a six-foot outside hitter, and five-foot-ten Casey Gilmour, who will add some crucial height to their lineup on the court.
The coach also praised outside hitter Emma Buyar for her hard work and the positive attitude she brings to the team, as well as Maddie Smith, a middle player whose athleticism has surprised the coach, given her relatively short time playing volleyball. "For a first-year player, she's been incredible," Russo Thorpe said.
With some of the recruits competing for starting positions, the team is set for a season of healthy competition. "Right now, if I had to name a starting lineup, I don't know who I would name," Russo Thorpe said, though she described this as a "good problem to have," noting that the rookies' high skill levels could lead to significant court time, whether as starters or in critical match situations.
However, the transition to collegiate athletics is not without challenges. The team practices five to six days a week, coupled with a rigorous strength and conditioning program. Russo Thorpe emphasized the importance of managing time effectively, balancing athletics with academics, and staying eligible to play. Veteran players like Anna Atcheynum have taken on mentorship roles, encouraging newcomers to prioritize their studies alongside their training commitments.
Looking ahead, Russo Thorpe hopes that the new recruits will not only develop as athletes but also grow as individuals. "It's about becoming disciplined, managing time well, and putting in consistent effort," she stated, referring to the transferable skills her athletes will take away from their time on the team. The coach aims for her players to enjoy their experience at NAIT while achieving success both on and off the court.
With a promising mix of talent and dedication, the NAIT Women's Volleyball team is ready to tackle the upcoming season. Their first match will be at Keyano College on October 25th at 6 p.m., and their first home game will be against Medicine Hat College on November 1st at 6 p.m.
