The men's basketball team, led by head coach Adika Peter-McNeilly, is revving up for an exciting season ahead.
Their opening match will be against last year's CCAA National Champions, Keyano College, which will be a tough first battle. Coach Peter-McNeilly is optimistic, seeing it as an opportunity to make some noise right off the bat and show what the team is capable of. "So far in the non-conference, we have shown that we have talent and the cohesiveness to play with anyone in the ACAC," he stated.
The team will be aiming for a spot in the playoffs. "We just want to put ourselves in the best position to play in the post-season." From there, it will be about seeing how far they can push.
The biggest challenge will come from the collective lack of experience compared to some of the other teams with older players. Most of the current team are first—or second-year students, but each match will provide them with the chance to reflect on and improve their performance. "Making mistakes is a part of the game," Coach Peter-McNeilly tells his players. "But learn from those mistakes, so they ultimately do not become a pattern."
The team has been exhibiting good chemistry during training camp and non-conference games. It's important for them to be able to hold each other accountable on and off the court so they can trust in one another and learn to work as a team.
The team will tip off in their home opener at the NAIT Gymnasium on October 25th at 8 pm.
