As the 2024/25 curling opener approaches, Karynn Flory-Simmons, Head Coach of the NAIT curling program, is feeling both excited and optimistic about the team's potential. With both the men's and women's teams already putting in significant work during extra practices and league games, their dedication is laying the groundwork for what promises to be another exciting season.
The ultimate goal for both teams is to reach the podium at the ACAC Championships and secure berths to the CCAA Nationals in Lethbridge this February. "These aspirations reflect the hard work and commitment our athletes have demonstrated so far." Coach Flory-Simmons stated.
The chemistry within both teams is another bright spot for the program heading into the season. The men's team, made up of seasoned ACAC veterans, is motivated and focused on building on their past experiences. Coming off a bronze medal in the ACAC championship and a fourth-place finish in the CCAA Nationals championship, their leadership will be key in guiding the team through what promises to be a competitive season.
On the women's side, the team is largely composed of rookies, who are eager to learn and bring a positive energy to the team chemistry. The athletes have shown an "impressive eagerness" to develop their skills.
The road ahead won't be without its challenges. For the women's team, the biggest hurdle will be adapting to the competitive level of play in the ACAC. "Transitioning to this level will require continuous effort and resilience," Flory-Simmons stated, noting that she is encouraged by the athlete's enthusiasm so far.
Another challenge the team will face is the short duration of the season itself, which leaves a small window for adjustments and fine-tuning performances. "Making the most of every game and quickly adapting to varying ice conditions at each event will be critical to our success," said Flory-Simmons.
With a talented, driven group of athletes and a focused coaching staff, the NAIT curling teams are poised for an exciting season ahead.
The teams will take to the ice for their first tournament from November 22-24 at the Rose City Curling Club in Camrose.
