The NAIT women's volleyball team is off to an impressive start this season, making remarkable strides. They have swept nearly every team in the south division and returned from winter break with a 3-0 victory over Augustana in their first match back.
In recent years, the team has struggled to secure a spot in the provincial championships. However, this season feels different, with a renowned sense of determination and promise.
Head coach Erminia Russo Thorpe shares her confidence in this talented group of athletes, who have shown exceptional dedication both on and off the court. "The thing I'm most happy about is how hard everyone has worked in practice," she said. "There's just a different feel to me than the years in the past."
This year's team exhibits a strong on-court connection, which has undoubtedly contributed to their success so far. Veteran players like Anna Atcheynum and Tanisha McQueen have stepped up as leaders, guiding and supporting their younger teammates.
The team's growth is evident in their consistent performance and high-level play. Coach Russo Thorpe emphasized her confidence in every player, noting the team's depth and reliability. "In times of crisis, I know I can count on my players to step up," she said.
Among the standout performers is first-year player Rachel Mallet, who has made an immediate impact. "You can't not mention Rachel," Coach Russo Thorpe said. "For a first-year player to step up and handle that kind of pressure is not easy."
Mallet has been a force on both offense and defense, demonstrating remarkable skill and leadership on the court for someone so early in her college career.
However, despite their strong season, the Ooks have faced setbacks with injuries. Multiple players have suffered sprained ankles, including fifth-year captain Anna Atcheynum, who was sidelined at the start of the season.
"What makes it such a challenge is managing these injuries through practice and play, knowing that some won't fully heal until the season ends," Russo Thorpe explained. "For me, it's about balancing what we need to do in practice while recognizing that some players won't be able to participate fully."
Even with these challenges, the Ooks remain relentless, pushing each other and finding ways to adapt despite missing key players.
As the season progresses, the team continues to focus on growth and maintaining their consistency, especially as they prepare to face top-ranked teams in their division over the next four weeks.
The Ooks currently hold a 7-3 record, placing them fourth in the North, and with Augustana hosting provincials this year, they'll need a third-place finish to qualify.
Their next home game is set for the 18th at 6:00 PM against The King's University Eagles.
