With Valentine's Day here, Courtney Webber, a libero on NAIT's women's volleyball team, shares a heartfelt story about her first true love, volleyball. She knew it was something special from the moment she picked up the sport.
"I fell in love with it at twelve years old in my dingy little junior high. After tryouts, the coach told me to come to practice every day, and at first, I think I just wanted an excuse to avoid homework or stay out a little longer. But I loved it so much that I gave it my all," she said.
Volleyball has been a defining part of Courtney's life since childhood, but it's not just the sport itself that keeps her coming back, it's the love for the training, the competition, and the challenges that come with it.
"I'm quite competitive, so I love being challenged. Volleyball has so many unpredictable variables, and that makes it even more exciting," she said.
When reflecting on her most memorable moments, Courtney points to signing with the NAIT women's volleyball team as a standout achievement. Beyond personal success in the ACAC conference, she values the chemistry she shares with her teammates.
"I feel like I've never had a team as close as this one. The bond we have is really something special," she said.
Comparing her team to a love story, Courtney describes it as a long-term, healthy relationship. One that requires commitment, resilience, and dedication.
"There are highs and lows, moments of exhaustion, times when you feel burned out, but the love always brings you back. It's about putting in the work and staying disciplined."
For many athletes, staying passionate about a sport can be difficult as they grow older, face confidence struggles, or experience challenging team dynamics. But for Courtney, volleyball remains a privilege, one that fuels her drive and keeps her motivated.
"I consider it a privilege because I wasn't grandfathered into the game. I'm a first-generation athlete in my family, so loving the sport as much as I do is a breath of fresh air. Honestly, it prevents burnout, I could never get tired of volleyball."
And just like any great love story, Courtney's journey with volleyball is far from over.
