As the NAIT Ooks Men's Volleyball gears up for the championship push, Head Coach Phil Dixon emphasizes a key theme that has shaped the team's approach this season: Extreme Ownership and Pre-emptive Ownership. Drawing from leadership principles in Jocko Willink's book, the Ooks are committed to a "no excuses" mentality where every player,
coach and staff member takes full responsibility for their actions and contributions to the team's success.
"Everyone, from players to coaches to our athletic therapists, needs to take full responsibility for their words and actions," said Coach Dixon.
NAIT has proven they can compete at the highest level, pushing the top-ranked teams in the country to the limit. A five-set battle against nationally ranked number one Red Deer showed the Ooks' ability to stand toe-to-toe with elite competition. However, Dixon knows there's still another level to reach.
"We learned we can compete with the top teams in the country, having lost to Red Deer in the fifth set. But we still need to serve and pass at a higher level to consistently compete with the best," he noted.
A key factor in NAIT's offensive success has been their middle-pipe attack, a staple of their system over the past few seasons. When firing on all cylinders, this attack has been the most efficient weapon in their arsenal. But as Dixon reiterates, the foundation of their
success still comes back to two fundamental skills.
"Our middle-pipe has been a staple of our offense the past few years, it's our most efficient attack when it's on. And of course, serving and passing will continue to be crucial for us."
With a relentless mindset and a commitment to growth, the Ooks are determined to raise their game when it matters most. As they head into championship play, the focus remains clear. Own every moment, take responsibility, and execute at the highest level. The Ooks hit the court in the opening game against the Lethbridge Kodiaks at 1 PM.
