The NAIT Ooks women's basketball team is set to take on the top competition in the ACAC Provincial Championships, with their sights set on securing a top-two finish and earning a spot at Nationals. Led by head coach Kiera Lyons, the Ooks enter the tournament as underdogs an identity they are embracing as a source of strength.
"Our goal is always to make Nationals, but we're always trying to focus on today," said Lyons. "What can we do today to prepare us for the tournament? Looking ahead puts unneeded pressure, so we control what we can control and do our best to stay in the present moment. We're underdogs going into this tournament, and that's a powerful thing to be."
That mindset has been crucial throughout the season as the Ooks have battled adversity, grown as a team, and gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to win. The lessons learned over the course of the season have shaped their approach heading into the championship tournament.
"We've learned lots about each other and ourselves this year," Lyons reflected. "We continue to build trust in our locker room and are always learning how to play with and for each other every day."
With preparation in full swing, the Ooks have emphasized competitive intensity in their practices leading up to the ACAC Championships. The coaching staff has reinforced the importance of pushing each other to be better every day, ensuring the team is battle-tested for the high stakes environment they are about to enter.
"Compete," Lyons said when asked about the focus of recent practices. "If our practices are the most competitive part of our season, then we are preparing in the right ways. Work hard and make each other better by competing as hard as you can every day."
As the Ooks head into the tournament, they do so with a strong belief in their ability to rise to the occasion. With trust, grit, and a focus on the present moment, they are ready to take on the challenge and fight for a spot on the national stage.
