The NAIT Ooks dominated the ACAC Championships, capturing their 8th consecutive team title, along with qualifying 10 players for CCAA Championships.
Edmonton, Alta. - The NAIT Ooks once again dominated the ACAC badminton scene this past weekend at the Provincial Championships. The Ooks captured their 8th straight ACAC Team Championship, along with winning three gold, two silver and two bronze medals in individual competition.
On Saturday afternoon the NAIT Ooks defeated the Concordia Thunder in the finals of the team competition to solidify the gold medal.
Sunday afternoon NAIT was equally as dominant in the individual competition. Led by head coach Sinead Cheah, the Ooks won Gold and Silver in both men's and women's doubles. On the men's side, Nick Roque and ACAC player of the year, Imran Wadia defeated fellow teammates Luc-Ly Nguyen and Tyler Walsh to capture the title. In women's action Caitlyn New and Kaitlyn Wilbee defeated fellow Ooks Bea Bernardo and Ryo Kuramochi to earn NAIT another two medals. Jeffrey Ko and Eyota Kwan captured yet another gold in mixed doubles, while Tyler Walsh and Ryo Kuramochi captured a bronze medal each in singles play.
To top of the successful weekend, Imran Wadia earned ACAC Male Player of The Year while head coach Sinead Cheah was named ACAC Coach of the Year.
With the outstanding performance this weekend, the NAIT Ooks entire team qualified for the CCAA Championships on Feb.28-Mar.3 at Concordia University of Edmonton, where they will be looking to capture national gold.
