EDMONTON, Alta. - The first placed NAIT Ooks men's hockey team defeated the SAIT Trojans 7-3 in a heated first game after the winter break.
The Ooks came out flying in the first period as they dominated the Trojans, outshooting them 25-4. Colby Livingstone, Dylan Stewart, Tanner Younghans, and Shane Fraser all found the back of the net, giving the Ooks a 4-1 lead at intermission. Eric Krienke scored the lone Trojan goal. The game evened out after that as the Ooks found the net three more times while the Trojans scored twice, and the shots being relatively equal.
The main story in this was about the polytechnic rivalry getting heated. This game saw 92 minutes in penalties (40 for SAIT and 52 for NAIT), including three 10 minute misconducts. The remaining 40 minutes of play was a battle of the special teams. The Ooks powerplay generated two goals, while the Trojans scored once with the man advantage.
"We liked our first period, getting out to a 4-1 lead," said NAIT head coach Tim Fragle. "The last two periods was a battle of special teams, and we won that battle."
