The NAIT Ooks men's soccer team kicked off against the Portage Voyageurs Saturday afternoon at the St. Albert Soccer Association. The NAIT Ooks won 14-0 over the Portage Voyageurs. It was a monumental game for the NAIT Ooks as forward Matt Zima set a new ACAC men's soccer all-time scoring record. Former Ook Charles O'Toole has held the record since 1989. The new record set today is 53 ACAC career goals. The NAIT Ooks beat the Voyageurs 14-0.
The Ooks started strong, with Cristian Lima scoring the first goal right off the draw. Seven minutes later, Emany Katiki hit home, giving the Ooks a 2-0 lead. The Voyageurs tried to fight back, but one minute later, Lima hit it home for his second of the afternoon. Quickly following the goal from Lima, Rodane Cato kicked it into the back of the net, giving the Ooks a 4-0 lead 10 minutes into the game.
The game started to slow down after the strong start by the Ooks. Coming into the game, Matt Zima needed to score two goals to tie the record and three to beat it. The Ooks' offense was doing its best to make both happen this game. Zima finally scored his first goal of the game at the twenty-minute mark. Pedro Neto and Peter Jones picked up a pair of goals before Matt Zima hit home, tying the ACAC record at the forty-minute mark. The NAIT Ooks picked up two more goals before the end of the half, giving them a 10-0 lead heading to the dressing room.
The crowd was buzzing as we entered the second half. Matt Zima broke the record at 53:30. He was presented with the game ball by NAIT Athletics Manager Jordan Richey. The game resumed after a short celebration.
The Portage Voyageurs tried to get their offense going, but they couldn't find a way to get to the net. The Ooks scored three more goals, beating the Voyageurs 14-0.
The players of the game were number 13, Matt Zima, for the NAIT Ooks, and number 17, Corwin Schieck.
