EDMONTON, Alta. – Greg Gulash has been named interim head coach of the NAIT Ooks men's volleyball team effective immediately. He takes over, as long-time head coach Doug Anton takes a sixth-month leave.
"We are extremely excited to have Greg take over as our interim men's volleyball coach. Greg has been a part of our program as a player and an assistant coach, so is very familiar with our men's volleyball program," said NAIT Athletics Manager Jordan Richey. "I cannot think of a better coach to step in and lead our team during this time of transition. Greg has the current players' trust and respect. The team is looking forward to getting the season underway this weekend."
Gulash takes the reigns of the men's volleyball team for the 2019-2020 season after having been the assistant coach for the last seven seasons. Outside of NAIT, Greg has been working for Aspire Volleyball alongside "Dr.Volleyball" Lorne Sawula for the last eight years. On top of that, Gulash has also coached nine U-18 club teams, helping over 80 athletes find post-secondary homes.
"I feel excited and grateful for the opportunity to help this group of young men accomplish their lofty goals, on and off the court. We will continue to build on the blueprint and foundation that Doug has laid out," said Gulash. "It's also very exciting to get the opportunity to represent NAIT in the volleyball and broader community as a head coach."
Before joining the Ooks' coaching staff, Gulash was the first player in NAIT men's volleyball history to play all five years of his eligibility. During that time he completed his Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in accounting. Following his degree, he also completed the Personal Fitness Trainer diploma to understand better how to link human kinetics to volleyball.
The Ooks will open up their 2019-2020 season this weekend as they face the Concordia Thunder in a home and home this weekend, with the first game taking place at 8:00 pm on Friday in the Concordia Gymnasium.
