OLDS, ALTA. – Kaitlyn Slator records the shutout as the NAIT Ooks defeated the Olds College Broncos 3-0 in game one of the ACAC women's hockey semifinals.
Both teams came out strong in the first period of the 2019 playoffs. Natsumi Kurokawa beat the Broncos Lexi Bruce at the 11:45 mark of the first period on a one-timer from the slot to open up the scoring and put NAIT up 1-0.
In the second period, the Ooks began to control the play outshooting the Broncos 15-1 in the period. As a result, they would add to their lead when Jordan McMillan found Cass Lyttle, who then found the back of the net at the 6:48 mark.
Delaney Martin added to the NAIT lead when she scored a shorthanded goal two minutes into the final period. That would be the end of the scoring as the NAIT Ooks would defeat the Olds Broncos 3-0 in the first game of the best of three series.
"Olds came out hard early, it took us a bit to adjust to match their intensity. It was good to have all of our lines buzzing and contributing," said NAIT head coach, Stef Thomson. "Now we need to reset and get ready for tomorrow so we don't get pushed back again at the start of the game."
Kaitlyn Slator made ten saves the shut out. Cass Lyttle took home player of the game honours for the Ooks, while Tori Chenier earned it for the Broncos.
The two teams will now rematch in game two at NAIT tomorrow night at 7:00 pm.
