The NAIT Ooks women's hockey team defeated the Olds Broncos 4-1 on Friday night.
EDMONTON, ALTA. – The NAIT Ooks proved why they are the top seed in the ACAC women's hockey playoffs as they defeated the Olds College Broncos 4-1, sweeping the best of three series advancing to the ACAC final.
The first period was all Ooks as they outshot the Broncos 17-3, scoring four goals and taking a 4-0 lead through twenty minutes. ACAC leading scorer Verca Kuzelova opened up the scoring with a beautiful backhand goal. NAIT Captain Brittney Savard followed up with a five-hole goal following a seamless tic-tac-toe sequence with Megan LeBlanc. Natsumi Kurikowa scored on the powerplay off a point shot at making it 3-0. Savard potted her second of the game on the powerplay as she beat Lexi Bruce off a rebound on the powerplay to close out the period.
The second period the Ooks attack continued as they were all over the Broncos outshooting them 17-6. The story in this period was the fact that Tori Eilers replaced Lexi Bruce at the intermission. Eilers stood on her head, turning away all 17 shots including several quality scoring shots by the Ooks.
In the third period, the Broncos would get on the board after Bree Ewards beat Kaitlyn Slator off of a scrum in front of the Ooks net. However, that would be the only offense that Olds could muster up as NAIT stood strong.
Brittney Savard's two goals gave her player of the game honours for the Ooks, while Tori Eilers earned the honours for the Broncos stopping all 20 shots she faced in replacement of Lexi Bruce.
The Ooks will now advance to the ACAC Championship final where they will face the winner of the MacEwan Griffins and Red Deer College Queens in a best of five series.
