EDMONTON, ALTA. - The NAIT Ooks fell 3-2 to MacEwan Griffins in game two of the ACAC Women's Hockey Championship on Saturday night at the Downtown Community Arena.
The NAIT Ooks came out flying in game two following a tough 1-0 loss in game one on Friday night. The Ooks outshot the Griffins 16-8 in the opening period. NAIT Captain Brittney Savard opened up the scoring for the Ooks as she potted a rebound past Sandy Heim off of a Julia Wing shot at the 7:46 mark of the game. A few minutes later, Rebecca Roszell fed Wynona Creyke out front from behind the net who then put it off the post and in, to give the Ooks a 2-0 lead through twenty minutes.
The Griffins would respond in the second outshooting the Ooks 13-4. Chantal Ricker would beat Kaitlyn Slator glove side on the powerplay at the 10:53 mark of the period, bringing the NAIT lead to just one, heading into the final period.
In the third period, the Ooks found themselves in penalty trouble as they would be charged with five minor penalties to MacEwan's one. The Griffins powerplay would go to work as they recorded two goals with the man advantage. Chantal Ricker would get her second goal of the game at the 3:53 mark to tie the game at two. Then at the 10:47 mark Raven Beazer would beat Slator to give MacEwan a 3-2 lead which they would hold on to for the win. Brittney Savard and Chantal Ricker took home Player of the Game honours.
"We had an incredible first period where we scored two great goals, but MacEwan showed up for the second period and we struggled to respond. We did a great job focusing on the details of our systems. Each time we gained a little bit of momentum, we were sent to the box. Unfortunately, when you are in the box for 20 minutes, and with the talent, they have on their powerplay they're bound to score. We've got our work cut out for us, but we are a young and resilient team, I know we will find a way to stay alive," said NAIT head coach Stef Thomson.
The Griffins now take a 2-0 lead in the best of five series. Game three will take place at 7:00 pm at the NAIT Arena on Thursday night.
