RED DEER, ALTA. – The NAIT Ooks are heading to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship final. As the Ooks' Jordan McMillan found the back of the net in double overtime of the third and deciding game against the Red Deer Collge Queens. With the win, the Ooks punch their ticket to the ACAC Championship series will they will face the MacEwan Griffins in a best of five series.
This game began gridlocked, with neither team being able to find a goal through 35 minutes of play. Just under five minutes left in the second period, the NAIT Ooks opened the scoring. Megan Leblanc received a face-off win in the offensive zone along the boards. She proceeded to dance through the Queen's defenders before sliding it past a sprawling Madison Fox to put the Ooks up 1-0.
Minutes into the third period, the Red Deer evened the contest. Mary Hirsch raced up the left side and ripped it by Kaitlyn Slator's glove.
The Ooks recaptured the lead at 7:05. Livia Lucova corralled a puck in the slot and then blasted it top shelf.
Queen's Head Coach Kelly Coulter elected to pull Fox with under three minutes remaining to get an extra attacker on the ice.
With 1:09 remaining, Queen's defender Kirsten Baumgardt stepped into a shot from the point and beat Slator over the glove, knotting the game 2-2 and eventually sending it to the first ten minute overtime frame, which would solve nothing.
With 11:08 left in double-overtime, Jordan McMillan ended the contest as she skated up the right side and snapped it to the far side for the game and series winner.
Jordan McMillan received the award for the Ooks.
Kirsten Baumgardt was chosen as the Queens Player-of-the-Game.
The NAIT Ooks will play the MacEwan University Griffins for ACAC gold in a best of five series beginning next weekend, times to be determined.
