EDMONTON, Alta. – Despite limiting the Grant MacEwan Griffins to only four goals (one empty net goal) through two games, the NAIT Ooks finds themselves on the verge of defeat in the best of five series after a 3-0 loss on Saturday night, that proved why going into the series that the Griffins truly were the team to beat.
The first period saw MacEwan largely dominate the time of possession with the puck as NAIT was having a hard time with the size and speed of the top seeded Griffins. The Ooks were able to hold strong though and carry a 0-0 score into the second period.
The Griffins capitalized on a rebound early in the second period to set the wheels in motion for the victory, taking a 1-0 lead that made the Ooks task of pulling off the victory and avenging their one goal defeat on Thursday night that much more difficult. It was an overall better period for the Ooks though as they began to make headway on the strong team defense of the Griffins and begin having some offensive zone time of their own.
The third period saw more powerplays for both sides that created some momentum for each team. Only the MacEwan team were able to capitalize on that momentum, scoring a goal on a harmless looking play that saw the Griffins player one hand stab the puck through the Ooks netminder. An empty net goal from their own end sealed the deal and put the Griffins only one game away from another ACAC championship.
MacEwan takes a 2-0 series lead in the best of five.
