On Friday night, the NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) Ooks women's hockey team faced the Lakeland Rustlers in the NAIT Arena.
The first period was a close one between the Ooks and the Rustlers. The Rustlers outshot the Ooks throughout the period, but the Ooks goalie Havana Batke was determined not to let one by her. This did not slow down the Ooks, though, as Ooks number sixteen Michaella Kibblewhite scored the game's first goal. Later in the period, the Rustlers got their first goal off a loose rebound to tie the game. The game-tying goal was scored by Mackenzie Stafford, assisted by Laiken Swan and Kaylee Hill.
It was 1-1 after one period of play.
The second period between the Rustlers and Ooks was again a close one. The Ooks scored first again, with number 12 Darby Robertson hitting it home to give her team the 2-1 lead. The Rustlers followed that up with a goal of their own six minutes later, with number 11 Kylie Perry scoring to tie the game once again. Both the Ooks goalie Batke and the Rustlers goalie Mackenzie Dojhan played solid between the pipes, keeping both teams in the game.
It was 2-2 after two periods of play.
Both teams came out blazing in the third period. No one wanted to go home with the loss. The NAIT Ooks hit it home first in the third period with a goal from number 24 Cheyenna Harden. Lakeland wasn't out of the game, though, because three minutes later, number 11 Kylie Perry hit it home for a second time tonight. The game was tied at three a piece halfway through the third period.
The teams stood firm throughout the rest of the period. Overtime would be needed to crown a winner. In the ACAC, the women's hockey overtime playoff format is 5 minutes of four on four, followed by five minutes of three on three. If no one is victorious, it will go to a shoot-out.
Both teams were getting chances in the four-on-four overtime period, but no one was budging. It wasn't until a minute into the second overtime that the NAIT Ooks could find their way to the back of the net thanks to a great goal by number 27 Cassidy Shandro. The NAIT Ooks won 4-3.
The players of the game were number 24, Cheyenna Harden, for the Ooks, and number 11, Kylie Perry, for the Rustlers.
