CAMROSE, AB - The Ooks Women's Soccer team kicked off the 2017-18 season with a 7-1 win on the road against the Augustana Vikings, this past Saturday.
Kaily Mohn led the charge by potting her first goal of the season in the 12th minute of the game. A quick surge followed suit as Alana Mawhinney found the back of the net in the 13th minute, and then Mohn once again responded in the 14th minute. The Ooks settled into the game with some good defensive play, which was led by 5th-year center back Sidney Doblanko. The Ooks scored two more times before the end of the half (both goals by Mohn in the 24th and 44th minute). A number of half time changes allowed Head Coach Carole Holt to get some fresh legs into the game and see some players in different positions. The Ooks converted again in the 60th minute when Doblanko scored off a corner kick. Marissa Webb capped off the scoring for the Ooks with a well-placed shot from 25 yards out. The Ooks gave up a late free kick just outside of the 18-yard box with just over five minutes to go, which was converted by the Vikings. Goalkeeper Ashley Chaput played the full 90 minutes.
Kaily Mohn finished the match with four goals and two assists which made her an easy nomination for the Player of the game, alongside keeper, Cassidy Newcombe from the Vikings.
The Ooks will travel across Edmonton for the next match, to face The King's University Eagles September 16, at 12:00pm. The Vikings next game will be September, 10th at Concordia University of Edmonton, where they will face the Thunder.
