EDMONTON – Second year forward Alana Mawhinney (Edmonton) struck for a trio of goals while rookie goalkeeper Renee Chattargoon (St. Alberta. Alta.) made a quartet of saves to earn her first ACAC shutout as the NAIT Ooks women's soccer team topped The King's University Eagles 6-0 on Saturday afternoon.
2016 CCAA player of the year Kassy Jajczay (Edmonton) picked up a pair of assists in the contest. Fifth year Bachelor of Applied Business Administration student Megan Loyns (Saskatoon) opened the scoring in the opening minute of the contest with her first goal of the season. Kiera O'Toole (Sherwood Park, Alta.) and Mawhinney scored 27-seconds apart in the 11th minute to give the Ooks a 3-0 half-time lead.
Mawhinney potted her second of the game in the 68th minute and her hat trick goal less than 9-minutes later to stake NAIT to a 5-0 lead. Second year Personal Fitness Trainer student Kennedy Ballam (Sherwood Park, Alta.) rounded out the scoring with her first of the season in the 82nd minute.
Fourth year goalkeeper Dani Kieftenbeld stopped 13 of the 19 shots she faced in a losing cause for the Eagles.
NAIT improves to 2-0 on the season and sits third in the ACAC North Divison, while TKU falls to 0-4. Up next for the Ooks is their home opener on Saturday when they face the first place Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder in a showdown of two of the top formations in the country. CUE is ranked second in the CCAA, while NAIT sit 8th after two weeks of competition. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 pm at NAIT Field.
