The NAIT Ooks women's soccer team defeated the Concordia Thunder 1-0 and will meet the SAIT Trojans in the final tomorrow.
CALGARY, ALTA. - The NAIT Ooks defeated the Concordia Thunder 1-0 in semi-final action at the 2018 ACAC Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday afternoon. They will now face the host SAIT Trojans on Sunday in the final.
Kennedy Hennig scored in the second minute of the game to give the Ooks an early lead; this would be the lone goal of the match giving NAIT the 1-0 victory.
The Ooks sustained pressure early in the match having several scoring chances but were unable to capitalize on them. Concordia would push back by beginning to break up NAIT's offensive attacks but were unable to generate any quality scoring chances, due to the Ooks quality defensive play. Thunder goalkeeper Selina Verkland was a force in the game keeping the Thunder in it, making a total of 12 saves including several outstanding stops.
Ooks head coach Carole Holt acknowledged that it wasn't her teams best performance "I don't think that was our best performance, defensively we played really well, offensively it wasn't our best game." When asked where the team can improve for tomorrow Holt said, "We need to pass the ball better, keep better possession and be patient."
Kennedy Hennig and Selina Verkland took home Player of the Game honours for each side.
The Ooks will now take on the host SAIT Trojans for ACAC gold tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm. The Trojans are the #1 seed from the south and like the NAIT Ooks, have yet to lose a game this season.
Both NAIT and SAIT have earned births to the CCAA Women's National Soccer Championships. This will be the seventh consecutive trip to Nationals for ACAC North Coach of the Year, Carole Holt and her NAIT Ooks.
